The enjoyment in fishing an area as vast as Lake Erie comes from the numerous ways you can strap on to one of these fat little porkers. Catching a Lake Erie smallmouth can be done differently moment to moment. You can start catching fish slow drifting a tube, and three minutes later when the wind starts blowing 3 to 5 foot swells, you can fill the livewell by ripping lipless cranks through that same water. Sure, anyone can argue that those techniques are applied frequently throughout all smallmouth fisheries, but try it when your targeting 4, 5, and 6 pound chunks!
Although NY is a top destination for smallmouth anglers, OH and PA offer some very underestimated waters. The Bassburgh staff frequents areas of Lake Erie that are about 2 ½ hrs. to 3 hrs. north of our home fishery, Pittsburgh PA. The trick to finding a good location is not necessarily following the other boats, I like to simply find a pocket of structure all to myself and hope that I tied good knots. I start sniffing around in water thats about 24' and less. Find a sweet drop-off from 9' to 16' of rock bottom and your face will have a bad case of Perma-grin! Not to mention the cramps you may get in your hand. Before you head to the big waters of Lake Erie, we highly recommend you visit all of the following state's links. The information provided at these sites will ensure a fun and safe trip!
